Written for a friend and musical companion who had teetered dangerously close to the abyss, nearly drowning in addiction and sorrow. I saw him one night and I could see a faint glimmer of life in his eyes, and was inspired to write this song. As of the release date of this song (Feb 20, 2020), he just passed one year sober, and his eyes and entire self are shining bright. He earned it.
lyrics
You've really earned this year
I see it in your face
I can see the lines that tell the story of heartbreak
You've really earned this year
And though it's been a while
And you've burned a couple tanks of gas to turn that smile
You've earned every mile
Tonight your hair looks good
And your suit is sharp
You only said a couple words to me but I heard your heart
Tonight your eyes are alive
The first time in half a year
I can't wait to sing this song with you, your voice so clear
And love near
You've rarely made it easy
Easy on yourself
Tonight let's drink water on the rocks
And dance to your health
To your health
To your health!
There's no need for explaining
Just give it all to me
Your story's done and over
There's nothing left to prove
And you're free
You're free
Just like me
And I know that you've really earned this year
